Zion Suzuki becomes the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the Champions League
We've had a few days to sit with this one, and it only grows on us. On September 8, Zion Suzuki started in goal for Aston Villa's Champions League opener away at Club Brugge and became the first Japanese goalkeeper ever to appear in the competition. It was not a quiet way to make history. Villa built a 3-1 halftime lead, Brugge clawed back to 3-2 and spent the second half laying siege, and Suzuki held the door shut with five saves on seven shots faced to see the match out. Sit with what that position has meant for Japan up to now. This is a country that has sent its wingers and playmakers to Europe's biggest stages for two decades, Nakata to Serie A, Kagawa to Dortmund, and now Kubo, Mitoma and Mainz's own Sano into the Premier League, Ligue 1 and beyond, but the goalkeeper's jersey rarely got to make that same trip. Eiji Kawashima and Shuichi Gonda anchored the national team for years without ever getting a real shot at Europe's top table. Suzuki is not just having a good month at a new club. He is quietly moving the line for a position Japanese football has always produced but almost never exported at this level, first in the Premier League a few weeks ago, now in the Champions League too. Two firsts, one goalkeeper, in his first month at Villa. That is not a stat for one season. That is a marker for what Japanese football can now claim it makes.
