The story
This is the shirt of a World Cup coming home. In 2002 Japan co-hosted the tournament with South Korea, the first World Cup ever held in Asia, and Philippe Troussier's side did what no Japan team had done before: they reached the knockout rounds. They topped Group H, drawing Belgium and beating Russia and Tunisia, a whole country in blue behind them, before going out to Turkey in the round of 16, an early Umit Davala header at Miyagi settling it. Royal blue with red trim and white adidas stripes, it is the shirt of Japan's breakthrough summer on home soil, and a foundational classic.
